What’s The Conditional Perfect Tense In Spanish?

The conditional perfect tense in Spanish is used to talk about something that would have happened if certain conditional would had been met.

For example: I would have written this article sooner, but I needed an extra hour of sleep this morning. So, I would have written this article earlier, but something got in the way.

How To Form The Conditional Perfect Tense

The conditional tense is formed like many others such as the past perfect tense, which uses the auxiliary verb Haber + the past participle of a verb (Ex. Comprado). However, with this tense, we use the verb Haber in the conditional tense (Habría).

So, let’s take a look at some sentences to better grasp this concept.

Yo habría comprado la leche, pero la tienda estaba cerrada

(I would have bought the milk, but the store was closed)

Ella lo habría entendido, pero no estudió la noche anterior

(She would have understood, but she didn’t study the night before)

Tú habrías sido el candidato, pero no llegaste a la reunión

(You would have been the candidate, but you didn't make it to the meeting)

IMPORTANT TIP:

If you use the word “if” (si) with this conjugation, you must use the imperfect subjunctive tense afterward. Below is an example of how this works. The conditional perfect tense will be the color BLUE and the imperfect subjunctive will be the color ORANGE.

Yo lo habría comprado si tuviera el dinero

(I would have bought it if I had the money)
