How to say “I will” In Spanish: Future Tense

I will teach you to use the future tense in Spanish. And you will leave this article with new skills or I WILL find you and… give you more examples so that you understand it better(?)

Idk… Today we will be going over the ABSOLUTE EASIEST CONJUGATION in the Spanish language!

The truth is that if you know the present tense conjugations, you have already proved you can learn much harder material. And thank goodness right? Sometimes it's kind of like how Elon Musk describes starting a business - “like eating glass and staring off into the abyss”

Don’t you agree? However, for once, we are going to look into a set of conjugations that actually makes sense. Grab a fork and a place, this lesson is about to be a piece of cake!

Summary: The Future Tense In Spanish

The conjugations for the Simple Future Tense in Spanish are extremely easy. This is how they work:

For I (Yo) you just add É to the infinitive form of the verb

Escribir - Escribiré | Aprender - Aprenderé | Hablar - Hablaré

For You (Tú) you just add ÁS to the infinitive form of the verb

Escribir - Escribirás | Aprender - Aprenderás | Hablar - Hablarás

For He/She/You-Formal (Él/Ella/Ust) you just add Á to the infinitive form of the verb

Escribir - Escribirá | Aprender - Aprenderá | Hablar - Hablará

For Them/You-Plural (Ellos/Ellas/Ustds) you just add ÁN to the infinitive form of the verb

Escribir - Escribirán | Aprender - Aprenderán | Hablar - Hablarán

For We (Nosotros) you just add EMOS to the infinitive form of the verb

Escribir - Escribiremos | Aprender - Aprenderemos | Hablar - Hablaremos

There are two other ways that Spanish speakers talk about the future that you should know about.

1. By using the present tense + a temporal word - like tomorrow. For example:

Te lo mando mañana

(I (will) send it to you tomorrow)

2. By using the present tense version of Ir (To go). For example:

Yo voy a aprender a nadar

(I am going to learn how to swim)

Easiest Conjugations In Spanish - Future Tense

Out of all of the conjugations in Spanish, without a doubt, the future tense is the easiest. If every tense was like this one we’d be speaking fluently after two months of studying.

Why is it so easy you ask? Because we only have to memorize 5 sets of letters and we just add them to the end of a verb in its infinite form.

Let’s take a look at these sets of letters that make up the Future Tense Conjugations:

I (Yo)

É

You (Tú)

ÁS

He/She/You-Formal (Él/Ella/Usted)

Á

Them/You-Plural (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes)

ÁN

You-Plural (Vosotros - Spain)

EMOS

You-Plural (Vosotros - Spain)

ÉIS

So to conjugate a verb in the future in Spanish, you just take the infinite verb (meaning how it is when it ends in AR/ER/IR) and add these to the end. For example: Escribir - To write

Yo escribiré

I will write

Tú escribirás

You will write

Él/Ella/Usted escribirá

He/She/You-Formal will write

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes escribirán

They/You-Plural will write

Nosotros escribiremos

You-Plural (Spain Only) will write

Now that we have a basic explanation, let’s dive into what will help the most - examples!

In the next section, we will go over examples for every subject so that when you leave this article you understand 100% how to use the future tense in Spanish.

Two Extra Tricks For Speaking About The Future

There are two other ways that we can speak about the future in Spanish. The first is by using the present tense version of “Ir” (meaning - to go). The second trick is by using the present tense of the verb + another word that indicates the future. For example “Mañana” (meaning - tomorrow).

Let’s take a look at both of these tricks in a little bit more detail.

#1 - Using (Present Tense) Ir To Speak In The Future Tense

With this trick, we just use the present tense of “To go” and we add a verb in its infinitive form to the end. This is the same as in English when we say I am going to study tomorrow”. Let’s take a look at some examples.

I (Yo)

Voy a viajar a Italia el próximo verano.

(I'm going to travel to Italy next summer.)

Voy a estudiar medicina en la universidad.

(I'm going to study medicine at the university.)

Voy a comprar un nuevo teléfono la próxima semana.

(I'm going to buy a new phone next week.)

Voy a trabajar en un proyecto emocionante.

(I'm going to work on an exciting project.)

Voy a aprender a tocar el piano.

(I'm going to learn to play the piano.)

You (Tú)

Vas a viajar a Francia el próximo verano.

(You’re going to travel to France next summer.)

Vas a estudiar Español en la universidad.

(You’re going to study medicine at the university.)

Vas a comprar una nevera nueva la próxima semana.

(You’re going to buy a new refrigerator next week.)

Vas a trabajar en una compañía nueva.

(You’re going to work in a new company.)

Vas a aprender a tocar la guitarra.

(You’re going to learn to play the guitar.)

He/She/You-Formal (Él/Ella/Usted)

Ella va a cantar en el concierto.

(She is going to sing at the concert.)

Usted va a estudiar medicina en la universidad.

(You are going to study medicine at the university.)

(My brother is going to learn to play the guitar.)

Él va a jugar un partido de fútbol mañana.

(He is going to play a soccer match tomorrow.)

Ella va a trabajar en esa tienda.

(She is going to work in that store.)

Them/You-Plural (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes)

Ellos van a viajar a Francia en las vacaciones.

(They are going to travel to France on vacation.)

Mis amigos van a estudiar en el extranjero el próximo año.

(My friends are going to study abroad next year.)

Los niños van a jugar en el parque esta tarde.

(The children are going to play at the park this afternoon.)

Ellas van a bailar en la competencia de danza.

(They are going to dance in the dance competition.)

Ustedes van a cantar en el concierto.

Vosotros vais a aprender a cocinar platos nuevos.

(You all are going to learn to cook new dishes.)

#2 - Using The Present Tense To Talk About The Future In Spanish

Another trick that we should use, although it isn’t taught often enough - is using the present tense to talk about the future. This is extremely normal and when I first began speaking with natives it kind of caught me off guard.

But the truth is, out of the 100 sentences that I say daily that refer to the future, probably 70 of them are said utilizing the present tense.

Let’s take a look at some examples.

Using The Present Tense For The Future In Spanish:

Te lo mando mañana

(I (will) sent it to you tomorrow)

Hablamos mañana

(We (will) talk tomorrow)

Nos vemos más tarde

(We (will) see each other later)

No te preocupes, lo hago ahora

(Don’t worry, I (will) do it in a bit)

Tranquilo, yo limpio el cuarto mañana

(Chill, I (will) clean the room tomorrow)

Conclusion: How To Say “I Will” In Spanish

As you have seen in this article. The future tense is extremely easy in Spanish and only requires that we memorize 5 sets of 1-2 letters for each subject.

Although the future tense is super easy, we can also use the two tricks mentioned in this article to speak in the future tense by using present tense verbs.

For example by using the word Voy + Verb in the infinitive form such as in the sentence “Voy a aprender a manejar” (I am going to learn how to drive).

Or we can also use other verbs in the present tense, and use a word such as later, tomorrow, or in a bit (to show that we're talking about the future). For example “Te lo mando más tarde” (I (will) send it to you later).
